the rain embrace

Chapter 1: The Rain's Embrace

The streets of the city were alive with the hustle and bustle of evening traffic, the neon lights flickering through the heavy curtain of rain. Priya stepped out of the office building, her mind tired from a long day of meetings and reports. She had hoped to catch a quick rickshaw home, but the downpour had other plans.

The rain came down in relentless sheets, soaking the streets and turning the pavement into a mirror of puddles. Priya pulled her jacket tighter around her body, but it did little to protect her from the torrential downpour. With no umbrella in sight, she did the only thing she could—raised her office bag above her head, attempting to shield herself from the water. It was futile, though; her thin jacket was already drenched, and her bag was only a temporary barrier.

The cold droplets struck her face, mingling with the exhaustion from the day, and soon, her hair clung to her cheeks in wet strands. She tried to keep her head down, walking briskly through the crowded streets, hoping to find a shelter, a rickshaw, anything. But the longer she walked, the more she felt the weight of the rain pressing in on her.

Every car that sped by splashed muddy water in her direction, and her shoes squelched with each step. Her bag barely protected her from the constant downpour, and her frustration grew with every passing second.

As she continued walking, her thoughts were distracted by the sounds of the city—horns honking, people shouting, the persistent hiss of tires on wet roads. But amidst it all, there was one thing she couldn’t escape—the cold, the wet, and the overwhelming sense of being alone.

She paused for a moment to adjust her bag, wiping the rainwater from her eyes, when she heard the sound of an engine revving behind her. Priya turned her head, thinking it might be another rickshaw, but what she saw instead caused a shiver to run down her spine.

A black car, sleek and menacing, was slowly approaching her, its headlights cutting through the thick rain. The vehicle pulled up alongside her, and the passenger window rolled down with a mechanical hiss. For a brief moment, Priya locked eyes with the person inside—someone she didn't recognize.

But before she could react, the man’s face twisted into a cold, calculating smile, and a voice from within the car called out to her.

"Need a lift?"

.

Priya shook her head, refusing the car offer. "No, thank you," she muttered, quickening her pace. The rain continued to pour relentlessly, drenching her even more as she walked faster, desperate to get home. The city streets were quieter now, with fewer people braving the storm. She turned onto a narrow road, one she usually avoided, but it was the quickest route to her apartment.

Her heart began to race as the sound of footsteps echoed behind her. At first, she thought it was just another person, but as she quickened her pace, the footsteps seemed to follow. She stopped for a moment, glancing over her shoulder. No one was in sight, but the feeling of being watched crept over her.

She continued walking, her breath quickening, the sound of the footsteps growing closer.
